Designing and building Knuckleheads Roadhouse Cafe involved transforming a former bakery outlet into a modern restaurant. Knuckleheads is located next to Southside Harley Davidson on Witchduck Road in Virginia Beach, VA.

The challenge: design an exciting biker-style venue that retains daytime family appeal. The space was fitted and concepts developed to incorporate a 1,500 square foot, top-of-the-line kitchen, along with multiple bars, dining space and outdoor dining decks wrapping the building.

Ionic developed a scheme that allowed exposed structural elements with spiral ductwork and twisted preformed metal light fixtures to take advantage of the existing space. The bards are adorned with stainless steel checker plating and open metal mesh. Huge drywall “clouds” suspended from the ceiling at various heights and angles define the bar areas. Copper roofing accents the outdoor porches, while metal wall panels and wood flooring complete the interior. An assortment of hand-selected, bike-themed artwork helps convert the space into a daytime lunch spot, and nighttime hot spot.
